In many parts of the world, young people are hailed as the “leaders of tomorrow.” Yet, when critical policies are being crafted today, their voices are often absent at the table. This gap comes at a high price, not just for young people, but for entire societies.
From education reforms to job creation and healthcare systems, policies shape the trajectory of national development. However, excluding the youth who make up a significant percentage of the population in Africa and beyond means overlooking the very group most affected by these decisions. For instance, when governments design employment policies without consulting young job seekers, the resulting programs often miss the mark, leading to persistent unemployment and frustration.
The consequences are not abstract. Disengaged youth translate to higher rates of migration, vulnerability to crime, and a widening gap between citizens and policymakers. More importantly, ignoring youth input silences innovative ideas and grassroots perspectives that could make policies more effective and inclusive.
Research shows that countries with strong youth participation in governance enjoy more resilient economies and stronger civic trust. By contrast, nations that neglect youth perspectives face recurring cycles of policy failure and social unrest. In Nigeria, for example, repeated education strikes have highlighted how policies created without sufficient student input fail to address the realities of learners.
The cost of exclusion is therefore not just social—it is economic and political. Investing in youth inclusion is not charity; it is smart governance. Policies shaped with young voices at the center are more responsive, future-focused, and sustainable.
The path forward is clear: governments, NGOs, and institutions must deliberately create structures that enable youth to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes. Youth councils, advisory boards, and civic tech platforms are just some of the tools that can bridge the gap.
The future belongs to young people, but if their voices are ignored in the present, societies risk building systems that will not survive tomorrow.
When youth are excluded, we lose more than voices—we lose innovation, energy, and fresh perspectives. The cost of ignoring youth today is a weaker society tomorrow.
Excellent piece. Youth inclusion in governance is not just about representation it’s about justice and equity. No society can thrive while sidelining its largest and most dynamic demographic.
